WRITER'S BLOCK: ESSENTIAL AFFIRMATIONS
In the last blog I talked about the need to reach out to others. Here I'd like to present five essential affirmations discussed by Pat Schneider in her book Writing Alone and with Others. She considers these affirmations necessary for any writing workshop/group.
"1. Everyone has a strong, unique voice.
2. Everyone is born with creative genius.
3. Writing as an art form belongs to all people, regardless of economic class or educational level.
4. The teaching of craft can be done without damage to a writer's original voice or artistic self-esteem.
5. A writer is someone who writes." (p.186)
While in various ways I have touched on these affirmations in my blogs, having read these in Schneider's book recently, I find myself feeling the power of them not only for group work, but for individual work as well. Specifically, keeping all of these affirmations visible during a writing session, I have found to be empowering.
Seeing these affirmations visually, all at the same time, is like having a supportive community. And, community is important to the writing process.
So, why not consider posting these affirmations for yourself so they're handy during your writing session?
